ISL: Ultimate goal is to win matches and trophies with FC Goa, says Alvaro Vazquez

With the latest addition to his team in Alvaro Vazquez, FC Goa has strengthened its attacking ranks ahead of the 2022-23 season of the Indian Super League (ISL).

The 31-year-old striker needs no introduction for fans of the game in the country, scoring eight times in 23 matches for Kerala Blasters in ISL 2021-22.

On Wednesday, in his first press conference as a FC Goa player, Vazquez spoke on a range of topics, including his reasons for joining Gaur, the team’s hopes for the upcoming season, thoughts on the ISL and more.

“To be honest, I’m playing India It has been an amazing experience,” commented the Spaniard. “I didn’t expect that there would be so many football lovers in India and they would receive me so well.

“At the end of last season, FC Goa showed the most interest, and they had a clear idea of how I would fit into their plans,” Vazquez revealed. “My agent clearly alerted me to the club’s interest at first, and later I spoke to a few players and the coach (Carlos Pea) before completely making up my mind.”

The former Spain junior international believes that having players and staff with prior league experience will help FC Goa.

“It is good that coach Carlos (Pea) has played the league and knows. We also have players who know how to play in the ISL. We are already in touch with each other and motivating each other to work harder as the ultimate goal is to win matches and trophies for the team.”

Vazquez also spoke about how he likes to put his team’s objectives ahead of his own. “Collective success is the primary focus. If we are able to perform well as a team, it means we have done well at the individual level as well.”

At FC Goa, lvaro Vazquez will look to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ferran Corominas and Igor Angulo, who made a habit of scoring in the club’s colours. Yet he remains unconcerned.

“I’ve known Koro from our time at Espanyol together. I know he showed his abilities in India. In terms of living up to his name, obviously, I’ll do my best, but first of all I I will focus on helping the team in every way possible.

“It’s my job, something I’ve done all my life, and so I’m all set,” he said.

“I have nothing but gratitude and respect for the fans of my former club Kerala Blasters. I am sure that I will develop a similar bond with the FC Goa fans. As we are no longer going to compete within Bio-Bubble, I look forward to meeting them and getting to know them well,” concludes Alvaro Vazquez.
