ISL 2021-22 FC Goa Preview: Will it finally be the year for Gaur?

FC Goa This season the Indian Super League (ISL) 2021-22 will be nothing less than both a shield and a trophy. Last season, he had a full set of foreign and coaches left for rival club Mumbai City FC, but as Juan Ferrando came on top, he kept up and really raised his level. They had only lost in the semi-finals, but now that the coach has completed a year with the team, two better performances would be expected from them. Goa will start this season against Mumbai City FC and will seek revenge. They have some good additions just like last season and a big minus from last time’s Igor Angulo as their leading goalscorer.

Strength

FC Goa have a very strong midfield and their bench strength is also very good there. They have Edu Bedia, Alberto Noguera, Brandon Fernandes, Princeton Rebello, Glenn Martins and Alexander Romario Jesuraj from last season. On top of these names, they have talented youngsters in the form of replacements for Mohamed Nemil, Danston Fernandes, Nongdamba Norem and Christy Davies. The strength in the middle of the pitch keeps them in good shape, as they love to play with the ball.

Another strength of the team is their coach. Ferrando showed last season that he was a tactical manager and knew how to balance the game on the field. Within a few months, he improved the Indian players in the team, taught them to work with pace and methodical pressure. After spending far too long, Ferrando will try to get his men into the league.

weakness

FC Goa have a very complete and strong team this time around, with Ferrando on top and making it even better. If there is one weakness that can be pointed out, it will be their bench strength in defense. While they have two superb foreign centre-backs in Evan Gonzalez and Dylan Fox, the lack of solid options as replacements in the position may be of little concern to the coach.

ISL 2020-21 Performance

Despite a new manager and change in overseas personnel, FC Goa put on a thrilling performance and only lost in the semi-final against Mumbai City FC. Some good wins, but after several draws and three losses, they made it to the playoffs from fourth place. They came up against eventual winners in the semi-finals and dominated both stages. However, they failed at the final hurdle, losing on penalties to end their season.

Most Notable New Signatures

Airam Cabrera: FC Goa have signed Airam after letting go of Angulo, who scored 14 goals and won the Golden Boot. At the end of the season, one could see the coach selling Angulo and Ortiz taking on a more advanced role as he wanted his front man to be more flexible. That’s where Airem comes in. He is much more proponent than Angulo and would be expected to pair well with Ortiz and Brandon.

history in islam

FC Goa has been the league’s most consistent team in the last seven years. They have made it to the playoffs six times out of seven seasons that no other team has achieved. FC Goa have won the league stage once (2019-20 season) but never won the title. The team has lost the final twice (2015 and 2018-19).

probability/prediction

FC Goa are the most likely to make it to the playoffs for one and could go on to win the ISL Shield. They may even reach the finals but may not be able to grab the trophy they have been saved from.
