Bank Holidays in April 2022: Private and public sector banks in India will remain closed on 1st April i.e. Friday, except in some states. But why is April 1st a bank holiday? This is due to the annual closure of bank accounts of banks notified by the Reserve Bank of India, which is reserved for bank employees every year. There are 15 holidays in the month of April in all private and public sector banks.

The Reserve Bank of India, or RBI, compiles a list of bank holidays every year. The list includes holidays under three categories – ‘Leave under Negotiable Instruments Act’, ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Bank’ Closing of Accounts’. According to that list, there are 15 bank holidays in this month due to different festivals for different regions.

It should also be noted that bank holidays are applicable for different occasions in states. Due to this, there are nine holidays in April, while the rest are weekend holidays. Branches of all public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks remain closed on holidays notified by RBI.
