Bank Holidays in April 2022: From Thursday, April 14, all public and private sector banks in most parts of India will remain closed for four straight days till April 17, Sunday. This will be due to various festivals like Ambedkar Jayanti, Good Friday and Bohag Bihu, while Sunday is a bank holiday. It has come into force according to a list issued by the Reserve Bank of India.

Out of 15 bank holidays this month, four bank holidays are starting from today. Banks will remain closed all over India except Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti/ Mahavir Jayanti/ Baisakhi/ Vaisakhi/ Tamil New Year’s Day/ Chiraoba/ Biju Mahotsav/ Bohag Bihu. Similarly, on the occasion of Good Friday/Bengali New Year’s Day (Nabvarsha)/Himachal Divas/Vishu/Bohag Bihu, all India except Rajasthan, Jammu and Srinagar observes a bank holiday on 15th April, Friday. 16 April 2022 will be a bank holiday in Assam on account of Bohag Bihu and Sunday will be a holiday for all banks across India. Therefore, it should be noted that apart from national holidays and weekend holidays, bank holidays are applicable as per regional occasions.

Bank holidays are effective as per the list prepared by RBI every year. The list includes holidays under three categories – ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’, ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday’ and ‘Banks’ Closing of Accounts’. As per the list, different branches remain closed on different occasions depending on the festival in the region. In addition, there are bank holidays at the national level on national holidays, whereby all branches in the private and public sectors remain closed. Branches of all public sector, private sector, foreign banks, co-operative banks and regional banks remain closed on holidays notified by RBI.
