Is 4-day work week the future for IT, bank employees? Learn how companies are adopting

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world in many ways since its emergence in 2020, and work culture across the globe is one of the major sectors that have been affected by it. Employers are re-imagining the workplace post-Covid, where other forms of work from home governance are likely to be modified, and a four-day work week could emerge as one of its consequences.

Some companies, including companies in India, have already shifted to a four-day work week to ensure a healthy work-life balance for their employees.

Some companies, including companies in India, have already shifted to a four-day work week to ensure a healthy work-life balance for their employees. According to the report, San Francisco-based cyber security company TAC, which has offices in India, jumped on board seven months ago to boost productivity. The Mumbai-based company shuts down on Friday to ‘make workers happier and more productive’, according to a statement.

According to a report by CNBC, technology company Bolt has become one of the newest organizations to transition to this new model globally. A campaign under 4 Day Week Global is also urging more employers to adopt this model, the report said.

CNBC quoted Joe O’Connor as saying, “We’re shifting the work model away from measuring how long you’re in the office, and moving toward what people are actually producing and we What results are you trying to achieve?” , Global Pilot Program Manager, 4 Day Week Global, says it.

Not only this, many IT companies are also considering moving to a hybrid work culture, where employees can work from home on some days of the week, and from office on other days. India’s largest IT employer Tata Consultancy Services or TCS has announced a 25×25 approach for the year 2025 in this regard. Under this policy, only 25 percent of TCS’s five lakh employees worldwide will be in their offices. Whereas the associates will spend only 25 percent of their time in the office. The company plans to co-locate only 25 per cent of the workforce within each project under this scheme, which came into limelight when TCS CEO Rajesh Gopinathan spoke about it while announcing the company’s FY20 annual report .

As far as the four-day working week is considered, the Indian government also plans to roll out the policy across the country, the report suggests. Labor and Employment Secretary Apoorva Chandra said in February that the new labor code, to be implemented in the near future, will allow companies to reduce the number of working days to four per week, according to media reports.

However, the working hours, which have been fixed at 48 hours per week, will remain ‘holy’, the official had said. This means that if the policy applies to most companies in India, employees will have to work 12 hours a day.

The hybrid work model is another option that employers are seriously considering. Not only TCS, but also Google CEO Sundar Pichai aims to make it ideal in the post-covid office landscape. In a letter to employees at the beginning of the year, it has been said that the company will follow a hybrid work model in the future. He had said that this is a model in which about 60 per cent of the employees will come together for some days every week in the office, another 20 per cent will work in new office locations and the remaining 20 per cent will work from home.
