The Odisha High Court has asked the Chief Secretary to ensure that doctors in the state write postmortem reports and prescriptions neatly and legibly. The order was made by the Supreme Court on January 4th, following a hearing in which a postmortem report was determined to be illegible. The doctor who authored the report had to be summoned to explain his findings. A person died as a result of a snake bite in this case, on behalf of the Tehsildar, the victim’s father.

What did the Odisha High Court say about the Doctor’s handwriting?
Justice SK Panigrahi, who heard the case, raised worry over the doctors’ carelessness in preparing the postmortem report. According to the Court, the inability to read these reports makes it impossible for the court system to interpret them and form a firm verdict. As a result, the Chief Secretary has been asked to send out a circular to all medical centers, private clinics, medical colleges, and hospitals. This includes neat handwriting or typing for prescriptions and medico-legal paperwork.

Following the doctor’s appearance in court, the High Court dismissed the petition and ordered the petitioner to submit a new report to the Tehsildar within a month. The Court further ordered the authorities to consider and settle the report by the law.
