Iran’s Defense Ministry said one of the drones was destroyed by the site’s anti-aircraft defense system, while the other two exploded.

Iran foiled a drone attack on a military site in the central Isfahan province, the defense ministry said early Sunday, reports IRNA news agency.

The announcement of the attack comes at a tense time in Iran, which has been rocked by protests over the death of Mahsa Amini in September, tensions over its nuclear program and accusations by some countries that Russia used drones to wage war in Tehran. is supplying. Ukraine.

The ministry said one drone was destroyed by the site’s anti-aircraft defense system, while the other two exploded.

“The operation of the complex was not hampered by the attack which took place at around 11.30 pm on Saturday,” the statement said.

A video widely shared on social media, the authenticity of which AFP could not verify, showed a loud explosion at the site and images of emergency vehicles then heading to the area.

Mohammad Reza Jan-Nesari, deputy governor of Isfahan province, also said on television that “there have been no casualties”, adding that “the cause of the incident is being investigated.”

Officials did not elaborate on activities at the target site north of Isfahan city.

Iran has several known nuclear research sites on its territory, including a uranium conversion plant.

In April 2021, Tehran announced that it had begun production of 60 percent enriched uranium at the Natanz site in Isfahan province.

Talks to restart the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran, the European Union and six major powers, known by its acronym JCPOA, stalled after the United States pulled out in 2018.

The accord was intended to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, an objective that Iran has always refused to pursue.

In recent years, Iran has accused Israel of carrying out several covert operations on its soil, including, according to Tehran, using a satellite-controlled machine gun that killed Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, a prominent nuclear physicist, in November 2020. killed.
