IPL Turning Point: Mumbai Indian’s winless run continues in the middle overs

At 49/0 after 6 overs with a run rate of 8.16, Mumbai Indians were in a good position to score a big total against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MCA Stadium on Saturday.

Their openers, captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan, had to remain silent for the first three overs. But were able to hit a boundary each as the three-over leg got 13 runs with David Willey and Mohammad Siraj getting some early swing from the green pitch.

From the fourth over itself, the boundary started coming fast for Mumbai. Sharma dances on the pitch and hits a six off Siraj’s ball at long on. He then bowled a full toss at mid-wicket.

For the first time in this tournament, Sharma was seen scoring runs fast. At the other end, Kishan welcomed leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga with back-to-back boundaries and Sharma added another boundary in the fifth over. Sharma started off with a power-play by timing a beautiful cover drive off Akash Deep.

But after the power-play, the match went downhill for Mumbai as Bangalore bounced back in the middle overs. Sharma tries to bowl the ball at a slower pace, Harshal Patel’s off-cutter, and an edge goes back to the bowler.

Dewald Brevis, the young under-19 sensation, was troubled by Deep hitting him twice with speed as well as bounce. Brevy’s erratic run at the crease ended when he went on the backfoot to counter a googly from Hasaranga, only for the ball to lob him into the lbw.

The calm phase maintained by Bangalore turned into panic mode for Mumbai as Kishan tried to ramp up a short ball from the deep and was caught at deep third man running to his right.

Four balls later, Tilak Verma ran through the off side for a non-existent single. But Glenn Maxwell fired a fine under-arm throw, diving from short cover to get the young left-hander caught away from his crease.

After a maiden double wicket in the tenth over, Hasranga added to Mumbai’s troubles when he slipped a googly to trap Kieron Pollard lbw for a golden duck.

Pollard went for a review, but could not change the decision as the umpire’s call had hit the ball over the bail. It was a proper slowdown affected by Bangalore’s bowling attack as Mumbai lost five wickets for just 12 runs in the last 3.5 overs.

Debutant all-rounder Ramandeep Singh struck slow outside Patel’s off-delivery and overtook the keeper for a low catch, putting Mumbai in further trouble at 79/6 in 13.2 overs.

Although Suryakumar Yadav hit an unbeaten 68 off 37 balls as Mumbai posted 59 runs at a run-rate of 11.80 in the last five overs, it could not make up for the loss in the middle overs, where 43 runs for 4.77. Runs came for the loss of six wickets at the rate.
