IPL 2024 To Be Held In India Despite General Elections, Confirms Chairman Arun Dhumal

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has confirmed that the Indian Premier League 2024 will be held in India despite the cash-rich league coinciding with the general elections next year.

Notably, the Lok Sabha Elections to choose the next Prime Minister of India, is all set to take place next year. The whole democratic process will be conducted on a large scale and an excessive number of security personnel needs to be deployed for elections in various parts of the country.

Therefore, many cities might have trouble in providing security for the IPL if the dates coincide with the voting process. However, the IPL chairman is confident that the 17th edition of the IPL will be played as scheduled in the month of March-May alongside the elections.

In an interview with Jagran News, the 46-year-old BCCI administrator said that the schedule of the IPL will be announced once the dates of the elections come out.

“The IPL will be held in India next year. We will need time to make the schedule because it will be made after the Election Committee announces the dates of the general elections,” Dhumal said.

“We will have to see when the different states have their elections and will make the schedule accordingly. We will need to wait and will need to work with the government,” he added.

Notably, the IPL has coincided with the General Elections thrice before – in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

In 2009, the entire tournament was played in South Africa while the first 20 matches of the league were held in the UAE in 2014  before being shifted to India.

However, the BCCI hosted the completed IPL 2019 in India despite it clashing with the elections in the country at the same time and similar is set to be done next year.
