East India Opening batsman and two-time IPL winning captain Gautam Gambhir I feel playing at Chepauk in the upcoming season of the cash-rich league is going to be a challenge for the visiting franchise. IPL 2023 will return to the home and away format, with all ten teams set to play seven matches at their home venues and seven away. Chennai has been one of the most dominant teams in the history of IPL in home conditions. The four-time IPL champions have a potent bowling attack to trouble the opposition in spin-friendly conditions.
Chennai would be looking to bounce back in IPL 2023 after a forgettable season last season where they finished ninth in the points table with just four wins from 14 matches.

Gambhir called Chepauk a bastion for CSK and suggested that when you play effective cricket at home, you might lose something away from home.
“When you play at home, which has always been the strength of Chennai Super Kings, they have always made it a point to make their home a fort. Whenever they have played outside, it has been a challenge for them. So when you win most of the matches at home, you don’t need to win too many matches abroad. So, it will be very challenging for the teams coming to their home ground in Chennai,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.
Gambhir, who mentored Lucknow Supergiants, said that all the franchises formed their teams in the IPL 2023 auction keeping in view the domestic conditions.
He said, ‘Earlier all the matches were played in the same conditions, but this time the grounds with different dimensions, wickets, combination will be challenging for the teams playing at different places. When the auction was going on, all the franchises prepared their teams keeping in mind their domestic conditions.”

The former India opener further pointed out that CSK have potent spinners to trouble the opposition at home.
He said, ‘If you look at the Chennai team, they have Mahesh Thikshana, Ravindra Jadeja, these guys are adapted to their home conditions. That’s why I believe you can’t take any team lightly. If the tournament was being held at two or three venues, perhaps you could have named two or three teams as favourites.”
