Delhi Capitals lost their way in their Indian Premier League match against Lucknow Super Giants here on Thursday after Prithvi Shaw’s swashbuckling innings ended at 149 for 3.

Shaw scored 61 off 34 balls before returning to the game with an impressive bowling performance from Lucknow Super Giants. Young leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/22) was one of the best performers for the newcomers in the IPL.

David Warner (4 of 12), returning to the franchise where he made his IPL debut in 2009, struggled in his first innings of the season.

The southeast was the only spectator at the other end, watching Shaw’s brutal attack on the opposition.

Off-spinner K Gotham (1/23) was given the ball in the second over and Shaw did not let him settle for the first four of his innings, sending a full ball over cover.

Jason Holder was on the receiving end in the next over when Shaw hit him for a six at mid-wicket. Then came the turn of fast bowler Avesh Khan who hit three consecutive fours in the fourth over.

It looked like Shaw was batting on a different surface while the others were struggling around him. He used his sharp hands to cut the ball and was equally quick to drive anything over cover.

It was a promising powerplay for Capitals to reach 52 for no loss in six overs. However, Lucknow bounced back after the powerplay with the wickets of Shaw, Warner and Rovman Powell (3 for 10) in the space of 18 balls.

After hitting Gautam for a straight six, Shaw got his catch. Warner fell on a poor shot off Bishnoi and Powell looked troubled at his stumps as he went for a slog-sweep from a googly from the young leg-spinner, leaving Capitals for 74 for three in the 11th over.

It was on skipper Rishabh Pant (39 not out on 36) to take the team to a respectable total and he did so in the company of Sarfaraz Khan (36 not out on 28) who was playing his first match for the franchise.

Pant mainly hit straight boundaries and Sarfaraz showed skill without taking too much risk which got him tons of runs in domestic cricket.

Capitals could not be strong enough as LSG conceded only 13 runs in the last 12 balls.

Brief Scores:

Delhi Capitals: 149 for 3 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 61, Rishabh Pant 39 not out, Sarfaraz Khan 36 not out, Ravi Bishnoi 2/22).
