IPL 2022: ‘Nice to see Andre Russell hitting; This was Russell Muscle’ – Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer was a jovial figure after KKR thrashed Punjab Kings in Game 8 of the Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium. At one point KKR themselves were struggling with a scorecard of 52/4 as Rahul Chahar bowled a double wicket maiden. But from here the game turned into just one over thanks to Andre Russell.

“We were shocked by Punjab’s approach. We didn’t expect them to work so hard against us after losing early wickets in the opening overs. But I wanted to do the same. We got early wickets in the powerplay. My plan was to keep my best bowlers for their hard-hitters. And so I kept Varun and Sunil for a long time. He made my job easy. They come out with their own strategy. They know what they have planned for the batsmen.”

“They know what they’re doing. To be honest, it was great to see Russell hit. It was Russell muscle. Umesh told me he was getting old, but I told him he was getting fit. Everywhere I go, I see him at the gym and he is working very hard. I know how to get him to work, and he has been a wonderful collaborator,” said Iyer.

Umesh Yadav continued his dream run with a four-wicket haul before Andre Russell put on his best to propel Kolkata Knight Riders to an easy six-wicket win over Punjab Kings here on Friday.

Umesh (4/23), coming into the season with just two games in the IPL and unsold at the start of the auction, produced career-best T20 figures, helping KKR reduce Punjab to 137 in 18.2 overs. Helped to get out on the score.

It was a straight forward chase, but Rahul Chahar raised Punjab’s hopes with a double wicket to reduce KKR to 51 for four.

However, Russell (70 not out from 31 balls) came in the middle and changed the game with his sixes, eight overall, taking it easy in just 14.3 overs. He hit three sixes in an over of 30 runs off Odeon Smith.
