Here we take a look at the major talking points of the competition

Shaw teases off

Prithvi Shaw started in the opening game of DC’s season, but fell to 38. He seemed to be in fine rhythm. In the second game, however, he could only score 10 runs. On Thursday, he was determined to be all guns blazing against LSG. The DC opener started off with a pair of fours from off-spinner Krishnappa Gautam and then hit Avesh Khan for a boundary. Except for Kunal Pandya, Shaw hit every bowler he faced in the competition for at least one boundary.

He was dismissed for 61 for 34, an innings that included nine fours and two sixes. And with DC’s scorecard reading 67/1! This was when Australian superstar David Warner was at the other end.

DC Overseas stars off to a rough start

Warner started his season in a bad way. Playing in his first match for Delhi Capitals on Thursday night, Warner never went ahead as he unsuccessfully attempted to break the free. He scored four runs from a scratch before Ravi Bishnoi delivered a sucker punch, prompting him to go after a wide delivery as he found a top edge to catch at backward point. It was also a forgettable night for another DC star Enrique Nortje, who, apart from being hit by Quinton de Kock, also failed to meet his quota of overs – more on this later.

QDK Anchor LSG Chase

What Shaw did for DC, Quinton de Kock repeated it for LSG. And did one better. Not only did he propel his innings during the opening part of the chase, he played the role of anchor and ensured it stayed on track despite the late hiccups. He scored runs on offer – Nortje scored 19 runs in an over. And completed his fifty in 36 balls. Even as LSG lost early succession to KL Rahul and Evin Lewis I, QDK’s presence was reassuring as he continued to play with ease, accumulating boundaries. He scored 80 off 52 before being dismissed.

Nortje. for an unforgettable night

There was excitement over the return of right-hander Pever Nortje, who has been a top performer for DC over the past few seasons. He was returning to competitive cricket after a long injury, but he immediately began to crank it up, bowling consistently at 140 kph. However, his countryman and South Africa teammate QDK had none of it as the lefty smashed his delivery for three consecutive boundaries and then pulled one over deep square leg for a six. In all, Norrte conceded 19 runs in his first over of the season.

DC skipper Rishabh Pant caught him back as late as the 14th over and he with a big beamer forced QDK to duck. However, the LSG batsman managed to put some of the bat on him, hitting him for a six over the keeper’s head.

Nortje received a warning for Beamer. And then he bowled another waist-high no ball in his next over, which the umpire deemed another dangerous delivery and, as per the rules, bowled two beamers, Nortje was out of the attack by just 14 legal balls for 35 runs. Given. Run.
