IPL 2022: Injured CSK bowler Deepak Chahar may be out for months

India and Chennai Super Kings pacer Deepak Chahar, who has already been ruled out of IPL 2022, is also likely to be out for at least the next three months. The 29-year-old suffered a quadricep tear during India’s T20I series against West Indies in February and was at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for his rehabilitation.

Preliminary assessment by the NCA physio had speculated that Chahar was set to miss a major part of the ongoing IPL season as his quick recovery saw CSK make a comeback at the end of April. However, the pacer suffered a back injury and was ruled out of IPL 2022 on Friday.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, CSK and BCCI have revealed that Chahar is out for 12 weeks and it will be a lot of progress if he actually makes it to the Twenty20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November.

The report further stated that the NCA physio has written a letter to the BCCI and the CSK management in which they have mentioned that Chahar has an L5 injury in his back and it will take a long time to recover. Actually, this Rajasthan cricketer will have to rest for six weeks before resuming his rehab.

Chahar was an integral part of CSK’s fourth championship win in IPL 2021, taking 14 wickets in 15 matches at an economy of 8.35. He was the originator of the team’s powerplay with the ball and was also a capable lower-order hitter, which cost the franchise Rs 14 crore to pick him up in the mega auction earlier this season.

In his absence the defending champions have won just one game out of five in the current season. However, the Chennai team management has made it clear that it has not sought any other player in place of Chahar.

“We have left it to the team management and they have not come back to us till now. We could not find an Indian bowler of Deepak’s caliber,” said CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.

It turns out that Ishant Sharma and Dhawal Kulkarni had some options, if not considered properly. However, none of them have been so effective in the powerplays. While Chahar has 42 wickets (average 28.85, economy rate 7.61) in powerplay overs since 2018, Ishant has nine wickets (average 32.55, economy rate 6.65). Kulkarni is no match with five wickets at an average of 73.40 and an economy rate of 8.34.

Meanwhile, a BCCI official has said that Chahar will not face any loss in IPL revenue even though he will not play a single match this season.

“BCCI has insured the IPL contracts of all the players and it is also paying the premium. If not the full Rs 14 crore from insurance, Deepak will collect the most.
