Sanjeev Goenka’s RPSG Group has bought Lucknow team for IPL 2022. During the auction in Dubai on Monday, RPSG Group made a bid of 7090 crores on Lucknow, which was the highest. After this, the BCCI has given him the ownership of this team. The Ekana Stadium can be the home ground of the Lucknow team. This group has already bought the team in the IPL. In the year 2016, the team of Rising Pune Supergiants was with this group. This team played in IPL for two years and also reached the final once.
After buying this team, Sanjeev Goenka said, “Very happy to be back in IPL. It was a long wait. We had planned a lot for this bid. I would like to thank all the people who have joined the league. This comeback has been immense. Pleasant.”
Not much amount of 7090 crores
When Sanjay Goenka was asked that the amount of 7090 crores for an IPL franchise is not much. Then he said that similar things were said when teams were bought for the first time in IPL. Look where those franchises are now. The most important thing is that we guessed right. We are very happy about this. On forming the team, he said, “We are confident that BCCI will bring us on par with the old owners. We will not suffer any kind of loss. We have the experience of creating new teams in IPL even before this. We have seen Rising Pune Supergiants in similar situations. The team was formed. This experience will come in handy and we will be in a good position.” RPSG Group had earlier also bought the franchise of Rising Pune Supergiants. This team came after the ban of Chennai Super Kings in the year 2016 and 2017. Under Dhoni’s captaincy, Pune had also reached the final once. The group has several businesses in the IT Services, Media & Entertainment, Consumer & Retail, Education and Sports sectors. RPSG Group also has investments in the Indian Super League. In the ISL, this group has bought the franchise of Kolkata. Along with this, the Goenka Group has a stake in the country’s legendary football club Mohun Bagan. This group has also bought the Kolkata team in the Ultimate Table Tennis League. There have been a lot of matches in the Ekana Stadium in the recent past. This stadium is also known as Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium. It has a seating capacity of about 50,000 spectators. In July 2019, the BCCI declared it the third home ground of the Afghanistan cricket team in India. In 2019, all the matches between Afghanistan and West Indies were hosted by this ground. Apart from this, 5 ODIs and 3 T20 matches between the Indian women’s team and the South African women’s team in March were also held at the Ekana Stadium.
