IPL 2021: Virat Kohli on Ishan Kishan’s Shoulders as Mumbai Indians Youngster Struggle for Form

Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan has not been at his best in the Indian Premier League season and is struggling for form.

On Sunday, as MI lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by 54 runs, Kishan had another poor outing with the bat, scoring just 9 runs off 12 balls including 1 four. In fact, he has scored just 107 runs in 8 matches so far this season with an average of 13.37 and a strike rate of 86.99. A far cry from his blistering knock in the previous edition, where he scored 516 runs and that too at an average of over 57 as Mumbai Indians won a record IPL title.

Due to his form, Kishan was selected to represent the Indian men’s national team and made his T20I debut against England at home, where he scored 80 runs in three matches including a fifty. He also did well in ODIs in Sri Lanka in July this year, scoring 60 runs and 1 half-century in 2 matches as the two Indian teams took the field in different parts of the world.

Kishan has also been included in India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup starting October 17 in Oman and UAE.

Kishan however is currently finding it difficult to find the middle of his bat and after the loss to RCB, India skipper Virat Kohli spoke to the youngster. Kohli, who last led India in the T20 format at the World Cup in October, had a lengthy conversation with Kishan.

Want to support my natural game: Rohit

In a post-match presentation, Mumbai Indians captain and India vice-captain Rohit Sharma said that he does not want to put undue pressure on the young batsman while downplaying concerns over Ishan Kishan’s form.

“He is a talented player. He had a great IPL last year. We want to support his natural game so he comes over Surya. Don’t want to put too much pressure on the boy. Relatively young, making his way into international cricket ,” said Rohit on Sunday.

Mumbai Indians will next take on Punjab Kings at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, 28 September.
