iPhone users, take note – If you encounter this Wi-Fi network name then your Wi-Fi access may suddenly be disabled. While this may sound familiar to be a bug that was only reported a while back, it appears that the previous bug was not a one-off. According to a new report by the same cybersecurity researcher Carl Shaw, while a previous bug caused iPhones to be disconnected from Wi-Fi networks after encountering a Wi-Fi ID named ‘%p%s%s%s%s%s%n’ was prevented from connecting. The new bug breaks Wi-Fi services on iPhone by encountering a Wi-Fi SSID named ‘%secretclub%power’. However, the new bug may be worse – whereas the previous bug required the user to try and connect to a network to disable Wi-Fi. iPhone, the new one can completely disable Wi-Fi on iPhone by a user, which is in the range of the latter.
According to reports, the problem lies in the iOS network code stack, which is flagging network names containing character string sequences like ‘%p’, ‘%s’ and ‘%n’ as bugged ones. As with the latest SSID name, encountering one within range of an iPhone can completely disable Wi-Fi services on the device concerned, and this in turn will not return simply by resetting the device’s network settings. Instead, users will need to perform a full hard reset of the iPhone to re-enable Wi-Fi services, hence indicating a much more difficult test than the previous bug. The latter disabled the user’s iPhone Wi-Fi services, which can only be returned by resetting network settings.
Thankfully, the issue is now being widely reported, which means that Apple will soon introduce a software update that fixes the glitch. Apple has generally been always quick to fix unexpected bugs in its code framework that can break certain iPhone services, especially if it is universal in nature. Considering that the bug applies to the code behind iOS software rather than specific devices, the glitch is most likely an issue for all iPhone users around the world. For the time being, users are advised to disable Wi-Fi network discovery when out in public, so as not to face such a problem.
Character string glitches are not very uncommon, but can have serious consequences. Popular messaging app WhatsApp has been a victim some of these, where specific character strings took advantage of flaws in the app’s code stack, causing the app to crash every time the user tried to open it – therefore rendering the service almost completely unusable. For bugs like this, the only real solution is to avoid the bug inducing character string at any cost, and update the app or software as soon as a fix is released.
