Every year 11 October is celebrated as International Girl Child Day. This opportunity reflects the importance of adolescent girls and tries to identify their strength and potential by opening up opportunities for them. It aims to amplify and empower the voice of teenage girls around the world.

Across the world, girls face gender-based challenges such as child marriage, discrimination, violence and poor learning opportunities. International Day of the Girl Child: History

The first convention to identify and discuss the rights of the girl child was the Beijing Declaration. At the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing, countries unanimously adopted the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action – considered the most progressive blueprint ever to advance the rights of not only women but girls.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 11 October as International Day of the Girl Child by passing a resolution on 19 December 2011. The day mainly focuses on the need to empower girls to accept the challenges faced by girls across the world and fulfill their human rights.

International Day of the Girl Child: Significance

The Seventeen Point Sustainable Development Goals that were adopted in 2017 include achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. Paramount in meeting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, International Day for the Girl Child, which aims to help young girls who have access to better health services, equal opportunities in education, and without any gender-based discrimination or violence.

The theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is “Digital Generation”. Our generation.” As the pandemic makes the world sit in front of laptop/mobile screens to learn and earn, around 2.2 billion people around the world still do not have an internet connection.

This has marginalized them, especially girls. Globally, the gender gap of Internet users has increased from 11 percent in 2013 to 17 percent in 2019. For the least developed countries, the percentage is around 43 percent.

In the era of digital revolution where people are using technology in various ways to learn new skills and earn revenue, women and girls cannot be left behind.
