MANGALURU: In another case of moral policing, two students from different communities were allegedly assaulted and harassed for traveling together on a two-wheeler in nearby Idya village. Surathkal Monday night here. Police arrested six people from the spot and registered a case.
“The accused said they belong to pro-Hindu organisations,” Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said.
The complainant, a BSc student of a college in Mukka, said that she was dropping her friend at her apartment complex in Idya at 10 pm when the accused threw her out of the way and started abusing her. “The accused chased the students on their bikes. He stopped them near the girl’s apartment complex and asked her name. After the students revealed their names, the group misbehaved with them. They reprimanded the girl for traveling with a boy from another community. After this the men beat up the students and even outraged the modesty of the girl by touching and pushing.
The police have named the arrested person as Prahlad. pacific, Guru Prasad, Pratish, Bharata and sukesh, “The accused was indulging in criminal activities which could have resulted in breach of communal harmony. He also threatened the complainant with dire consequences for hanging out with a girl from another community,” the police said.
According to sources a case has been registered under various Indian Penal Code Sections and accused were produced in court at Surathkal police station.
