In Punjab, Navjot Singh Sidhu surprised everyone by abruptly resigning from the post of state Congress chief. Till yesterday, Sidhu was trying hard to get Congress power in Punjab in 2022. Today suddenly left the chair.
Actually Sidhu’s resignation is not sudden. The script was ready as soon as the captain stepped out of the chair. Sidhu actually wanted to run the Congress like a Captain. He wanted everything from the organization to the government under his control. This did not happen and Sidhu had to go through a challenge from local leaders to the high command. Because of this, Sidhu left the chair in about two and a half months.
The period of resentment started from here
- Sidhu himself wanted to become the CM after Captain Amarinder left. The high command put Sunil Jakhar forward. Sidhu was stunned. When he agreed, the issue of having Sikh CM in Punjab only arose. Sidhu again staked the claim, but the high command denied him and forwarded Sukhjinder Randhawa. After this Sidhu got angry. In the end, Charanjit Channi became the CM.
- After Channi became CM, Sidhu wanted to dominate him. Sidhu continued to roam with them. Sometimes holding hands and sometimes placing a hand on the shoulder. Questions started being raised about this that Sidhu is acting like a super CM. When the criticism started, Sidhu had to back down.
- As soon as Channi became the CM, Sidhu wanted Advocate DS Patwalia to be the new Advocate General of Punjab. His file was also sent. After this other leaders obstructed. First Anmol Ratan Sidhu and then APS Deol were made Advocate General.
- In the Channi government, Sidhu wanted his close ones to become ministers. Sidhu’s arbitrariness did not go in this. From Brahm Mohindra, Vijay Inder Singla, who was close to the Captain, many old ministers joined back. Apart from this, despite the role in sand mining on Rana Gurjit, he was given a ministerial post. Sidhu was angry about 4 such names. He did not go to stop them.
- The Congress high command called only Charanjit Channi in the meeting convened to finalize the names of the ministers. Sidhu was not included in this. The high command did not finalize the list mentioned by Sidhu. Because of this, he got angry.
- Sidhu wanted Siddharth Chattopadhyay to be made the new DGP of Punjab. For this, the whole camp had also started. Despite this, when Dinkar Gupta went on leave, Channi gave the charge of DGP to Iqbalpreet Singh Sahota.
- Sidhu wanted the state home department to remain with CM Charanjit Channi. Despite this, the Ministry of Home Affairs was given to Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa in partition. After this Sidhu lost his patience. He resigned by noon.
Sidhu did not attend the first cabinet meeting
It has been a tradition in the Congress that whenever the Congress government is formed, the Pradhan is also called there before the cabinet meeting. 15 ministers took oath on Sunday. After this, on Monday, CM Charanjit Channi called a meeting of the entire cabinet. Despite this, Sidhu did not reach there. Because of this his displeasure came to the fore.
CM’s chair was not sure even in the next election
Sidhu put pressure on the Congress high command and did not allow Sukhjinder Randhawa to become the Chief Minister. Sidhu knew that if Randhawa becomes CM, he will not be the face of Congress next year. With the help of Charanjit Channi, he was hoping to be able to get the chair next time.
Through Harish Rawat, he also said that the next election would be fought under the leadership of Sidhu, then the controversy started that it was like questioning the role of Punjab CM Charanjit Channi. After this, the high command had to clarify that Channi would be the face along with Sidhu in the next election. Sidhu understood that even if Congress comes to power next time, it is not so easy for him to get the CM’s chair.
