Innovative approach of Calcutta Medical College to treat rare blood patients

If a patient’s body requires the rarest of blood, blood can be collected from that person’s body and given to him before surgery. The Department of Hematology, Calcutta Medical College has come up with such a novel approach.

The Calcutta Medical College Hospital has introduced ‘Patient Blood Management System’ for the treatment of people with very rare blood. In this system, the patient’s body will be kept soaked in blood before the surgery. The collected blood will be supplied to the patient’s body during the surgery. This procedure was recently performed during surgery on a patient in the cardiology department of the hospital. Before the operation, the patient’s blood was tested and it was found that the person had ‘Achid’ blood group in his body. The doctors said that surgery is possible only if the blood of that group is found. The family members of the patient looked for blood, but no trace of blood of that group was found. Finally, the hematology department took blood from the patient’s body and collected it. It is provided during surgery.

In this regard, Professor Biplobendu Talukdar, Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, Calcutta Medical College said that when a surgeon examines the blood group of a patient, he can get an idea of how much blood can be removed from the patient’s body. If that amount of blood is taken out of the patient’s body, then the patient can get his life back from the blood given by him.
