Infosys co-founders Nandan Nilekani and Rohini Nilekani donated Rs 252 crore in FY 2011

Hurun India and EdelGive recently released the 8th Annual EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021. The ranking, which is released every year, charts most generous person in country. This year, the Nilekani family of Infosys continued its track record, with co-founder Nandan Nilekani donating Rs 183 crore for social thinking in FY 2021, finishing fifth on the list. Besides them, Rohini Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan and SD Shibulal – all from Infosys Group – donated Rs 69 crore, Rs 50 crore and Rs 35 crore respectively. Billionaires Nandan Nilekani and Rohini Nilekani signed the ‘Giving Pledge’ in 2017 which is a network of the wealthiest individuals who dedicate their wealth to philanthropy.

Chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropy and co-founder of EkStep, a non-profit education platform, Rohini Nilekani donated Rs 69 crore in her personal capacity, according to the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. She topped the list of nine women featured in the chart. Rohini Nilekani has thus earned the title of India’s most generous woman. She was followed by Leena Gandhi Tiwari of USV who donated Rs 24 crore, and Anu Agha of Thermax who donated Rs 20 crore.

In 2017, when Nandan and Rohini Nilekani signed The Giving Pledge, created by Bill & Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett, they wrote in a letter that they were inspired by the ideals of the Bhagavad Gita. “

Wipro’s Azim Premji retained the title of ‘India’s most generous’ for the second time in a row with a donation of Rs 9,713 crore. According to press releases by EdelGive and Hurun India, the Wipro chairman and founder donated Rs 27 crore daily to social causes.

Shiv Nadar of HCL Technologies stood second. According to the EduGive Hurun India list, Nadar donated Rs 1,263 in the financial year 2021. The Big Bull, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala earned the title of most generous new entrant. This very few stock market investor donated Rs 50 crore as per the list.

“It is our endeavor to highlight India’s remarkable donors and capture the growing importance of individual donors in India’s philanthropic landscape towards nation-building. Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalents from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2021. This is the eighth year on the list and it continues from the Hurun India Rich List, a ranking of India’s 1,007 richest people. For the tenth year in September 2021,” Hurun India and EdelGive said in a press release.
