Indonesia Open 2023: India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu stunned local favorite Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in her opening round of the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000 in Jakarta on Tuesday. After first round losses in her previous two editions, Sindhu returned to form with a straight game win over Tunjung. He won the match 21-19, 21-15 in 38 minutes to set up a round-of-16 encounter with his Taiwanese opponent.

Sindhu fought back from 7-9 down in the opening game. He took full advantage of three errors by the Indonesian to lead 11-10 and eventually took the game 21-19. The 27-year-old then maintained his momentum in the second game to beat his opponent 21-15.

This is Sindhu’s first win over Tunjung in her last three attempts after losing the Madrid Masters final and Malaysian Masters semi-finals earlier this year. Sindhu now has an 8-2 record against him.

Also, she will now face Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying. Tai Tzu is on an eight-match winning streak and leads 18-5 overall. Tai Tzu is the same player who defeated Sindhu in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics.

Meanwhile, HS Prannoy also defeated Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in straight games 21-16 21-14.
