The matter of preventing a disabled child from boarding the plane has reached the center on behalf of Indigo Airlines. On Monday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said that such behavior will not be tolerated. After this the CEO of the airline has apologized.

At the same time, the country’s aviation regulation body DGCA has constituted a three-member team to investigate the matter. This team will go to Ranchi and Hyderabad and investigate the whole matter. The team will have to collect the necessary evidence and submit it to the DGCA within a week. Based on these, further action will be decided.

Actually, on Saturday, a handicapped boy reached Ranchi airport with his parents. During this, he was stopped from boarding IndiGo’s Ranchi-Hyderabad flight, after which his parents also decided not to travel on the plane.

The minister wrote on Twitter, ‘There is zero tolerance for such an attitude. No human should go through this! I am probing the matter myself, after which appropriate action will be taken. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has also sought a report from IndiGo. Action has been taken in this matter after being shared on social media.

The airline apologized
Indigo issued a statement on Monday quoting its CEO Ronojoy Dutta as saying, “Unfortunate incident happened on May 7 at Ranchi Airport, when a disabled teenager and his parents could not board the flight to Hyderabad. All the employees of Indigo are worried about this incident. From April 2022 till now, we have flown about 75 thousand differently abled people. Our crew and airport staff are given special training to provide better treatment to passengers with special needs.

The company further said, “During the check-in and boarding process, we obviously wanted to take the family, but the teenager looked very nervous in the boarding area. Although it is our most important responsibility to treat passengers with courtesy and sympathy, but in view of the safety guidelines, the airport staff had to take a difficult decision. After examining all the aspects of this incident, we as an institution have come to the conclusion that we have taken the best decision in difficult times.

Fellow passenger shared the whole incident on social media
A passenger named Manisha Gupta explained the incident in detail on social media. He wrote that a handicapped child was afraid to board the flight at Ranchi airport on Saturday. His parents were trying to pacify him. Meanwhile, IndiGo personnel refused to board the child. He argued that this put other passengers at risk.

Gupta said that other passengers opposed it. He also referred to the SC judgment, which said that no airline can discriminate against passengers with disabilities. There was also a group of doctors on the plane, who offered to help if the child had any problem mid-way. Despite this, IndiGo personnel did not allow the child to board the plane.
