India’s Omicron variant tracking patient zero – Karnataka Health Minister shares latest update

New Delhi: The government on Thursday confirmed that two cases of the Omicron version of the dreaded coronavirus have been detected in India. According to the Union Health Ministry, both the positive patients came out from Karnataka. The patients have been identified as 46-year-old and 66-year-old men.

Two secondary contacts and three primary contacts of a 46-year-old male tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19 and their samples have been taken for genome sequencing, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) told news agency ANI on December 2. . Has been sent.

“13 primary contacts and 205 secondary contacts of a 46-year-old male were tested. Of which, between November 22 and 25, three primary contacts and two secondary contacts tested positive. All are in isolation. Their samples have been taken. The genomes were sent for sequencing, the results are awaited,” it said.

Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar told ANI, India’s first Omicron patient, a 66-year-old South African national, left India after testing negative, but before the genome sequencing results were known. Another person who tested positive for the Omicron version of Covid-19, a 46-year-old doctor, has no travel history.

“Out of his (doctor’s) primary and secondary contacts, 5 people tested positive for COVID-19. So a total of 6 people have been isolated, admitted to the government hospital. None of them is showing serious symptoms. All these people are fully vaccinated,” Minister K Sudhakar told ANI.

“The person who left for South Africa via Dubai had submitted a negative certificate for the virus from a private lab. His primary and secondary contacts (264 in total) were found negative. So this means that His certificate may be correct,” he added.

The Omicron version of COVID-19 was first reported by the WHO on 25 November from South Africa.

On 24 November, the World Health Organization (WHO) gave information about the new variant Omicron in South Africa. According to the WHO, extreme mutations in the spike protein could make it more contagious than all previous strains of coronavirus. South African medical officials have said the variant was found in fully vaccinated individuals and showed mild symptoms.
