India’s Marathon Race Walk Mixed Relay Team: Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami, Paris Olympics 2024
Suraj Panwar will feature at the marathon race walk mixed relay event alongside national record holder Priyanka Goswami.
Suraj, 23, is more known for his performances in 20km race walk.
“I have never competed in a marathon race walk mixed relay in my career, this is going to be my first time. So, I don’t even have a target timing in my mind. But, it’s a matter of representing my country and I will give my 100 per cent,” Panwar said in an interview to news agency PTI.
It is worth noting that the marathon race walk mixed relay event was introduced in a major championship at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, Turkiye in April. The race will make its Olympics debut in Paris.
Suraj lost his father Udai Singh Panwar at an early age. His mother Poonam used to worked at the forest department’s nursery in a village near Dehradun and supported his sporting ambitions.
Suraj competed at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires and won a silver medal in the men’s 5000m race walk.
Meanwhile, Suraj’s marathon partner Priyanka will also participate in the women’s 20km race walk event at the Paris Olympics. She represented India at the Tokyo Olympics and finished 17th in 20km race walk.

Paris Olympics Qualification
Priyanka claimed her Paris Olympics quota for the marathon race walk mixed relay event during the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya in April. Partnering with Akshdeep Singh, Goswami finished the race in 3:05:03 to ensure their entry into the mega event.
Meanwhile, Suraj was initially selected for the men’s 20km race walk. He was later shifted to the marathon mixed relay, replacing Singh, who will compete only at the men’s 20km race walk in Paris.
Recent Performances
Priyanka appeared at the Chinese Race Walking Grand Prix earlier in March. She clocked 1 hour 29 minutes and 48 seconds in the 20km race walk event and finished seventh. It was her best performance on foreign soil and the third-best in her entire career.
Suraj completed a 20km race walk in 1 hour 19 minutes 44 seconds at the National Championships in Chandigarh in January. The World Athletics, however, later invalidated the result, referring to a technical glitch.
