India’s envoy to Palestine Mukul Arya passes away; External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said, deeply shocked

India’s representative in Ramallah Mukul Arya passed away on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs announced.

Ministry. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet, “Deeply shocked to learn about the passing away of Shri Mukul Arya, Representative of India in Ramallah.”

“He was a bright and talented officer, he had a lot in front of him. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti,” he said.

The Palestinian leadership also expressed grief over the death of Mukul Arya at his workplace. Dr. Riyadh Al-Maliki, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas, expressed his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar and through him to the friendly Government of India, Ambassador Arya and the family of his relatives.

The Ministry of External Affairs and expatriates have also expressed their deep sorrow, loss and pain at the passing away of Ambassador Arya in a statement. The ministry said that it is organizing its official liaison with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to make arrangements to take the body of the deceased ambassador to India for his funeral.

“As soon as this painful news broke, immediate instructions were issued from President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Dr Muhammad Shtayyeh to all security, police and public officials,” the statement said.

It was not immediately known how he died.

Arya, a career diplomat, has also served in the Ministry of External Affairs in Delhi, apart from serving on India’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO in Paris and India’s embassies in Kabul and Moscow.

According to the website of India’s Representative Office in Ramallah, Palestine, he was raised and educated in Delhi, studied economics at Delhi University and JNU, before joining the Indian Foreign Service in 2008.
