According to the power ministry data, the electricity consumption in June last year was recorded at 114.48 BU, which was up from 105.08 BU in the same month of 2020.

Electricity consumption in the country rose 17.2 per cent year-on-year to 134.13 billion units (BU) amid scorching heat and a pick-up in economic activity. According to the power ministry data, the electricity consumption in June last year was recorded at 114.48 BU, which was up from 105.08 BU in the same month of 2020.

Further, the peak power demand, which is the highest in a single day supply, reached an all-time high of 209.80 GW (as on June 8) during June this year. The peak power supply was 191.24 GW in June 2021 and 164.98 GW in June 2020.

Electricity consumption and demand were affected in June 2020 due to the imposition of lockdown restrictions to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Electricity consumption in June 2019 (pre-epidemic period) was 117.98 billion units.

According to experts, electricity consumption and demand increased mainly due to scorching heat and spurt in economic activities, which boosted the commercial and industrial requirements of electricity in the country. A third wave of the pandemic hit the country in January this year, forcing several states to impose local restrictions such as night and weekend curfews. He had also taken measures like banning food in bars and restaurants. These restrictions were gradually eased.

According to experts, the demand and consumption of electricity is likely to grow at a higher rate in the coming months.
