India’s coal import register down 26.8 percent to 15.75 MT in October: Mjunction

New Delhi: According to data compiled by mjunction services, the country’s coal imports fell 26.8 per cent to 15.75 million tonnes in October from a year ago in the same month.

According to the data, “India’s coal and coke imports through major and non-major ports in October 2021 are projected to decline by 26.8 per cent as compared to October 2020.”

Data from mjunction, a joint venture between Tata Steel and SAIL, showed coal imports were up six per cent in October, as compared to 14.85 million tonnes imported during September 2021.

Vinay Verma, MD & CEO, mjunction, said, “While there was strong demand for coal from the power sector during the festive season, firm prices in the maritime market restricted the import volume.

“Import demand is likely to remain subdued in the coming months due to improvement in domestic supply,” said mjunction MD and CEO, B2B e-commerce company.

Of the total imports in October this year, non-coking coal imports stood at 9.47 million tonnes as against 14.46 million tonnes in October 2020.

Earlier in October 2020, India imported 21.50 million tonnes of coal.

Coking coal imports stood at 4.05 million tonnes, which is lower than 4.92 million tonnes imported in October 2020.

Total coal imports stood at 123.09 million tonnes during the April-October period of the current financial year – nearly 5.4 per cent higher than 116.81 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

Import of non-coking coal during April-October period stood at 79.54 million tonnes, slightly higher than 77.67 million tonnes during April-October period, which was imported during April-October of the previous fiscal.

Import of coking coal stood at 30.51 million tonnes as against 23.89 million tonnes imported during the year-ago period.
