Indian Railways re-designated the post of ‘Guard’ as ‘Train Manager’ with immediate effect

New Delhi: In a significant development, the Indian Railways on Friday informed that it has decided to re-designate the post of ‘Guard’ as “Train Manager” with immediate effect.

A statement from the Indian Railways said, “The issue of changing the designation of Train Guard to “Train Manager” has been a long pending issue.

“The demand was raised because the designation ‘train guard’ had become obsolete and in the society, there is a reference to the common man that he may be a guard in some private form, etc.

In GSR, the train guard is virtually the train in-charge of the train concerned. “Therefore, it would be quite appropriate that the existing designation of Train Guard be changed to “Train Manager”, which would be an honorable designation for them without any financial implication, so that they may lead a dignified life in the society,” the statement said. added.

Railways further said in a tweet, “The revised designation is in line with their existing duties and responsibilities and will improve the motivation level of the guards who are now Train Managers.”

The revised designations will not make any change in their pay level, mode of recruitment, existing duties and responsibilities, seniority and avenues of promotion, said a statement from the Indian Railways.

As per the revised guidelines, an assistant guard will now be called an assistant passenger train manager and a goods guard will be called a goods train manager.

Senior Freight Train Manager has been re-designated as Senior Freight Train Manager, Senior Passenger Guard is now Senior Passenger Train Manager.
