Indian Army Day 2022: India celebrates Army Day on 15 January with great enthusiasm. It commemorates Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa (KM Cariappa), who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. Every year, the day is marked by conducting a military parade and several other martial performances at the Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment.
We will celebrate 74th Indian Army Day in 2022 with almost the same pride, zeal and enthusiasm so that our future generations can understand the sacrifice and contribution of Indian Army.
History and Significance
On April 1, 1895, the British Indian Army was established within the British administration and was known as the British Indian Army. After India became independent in 1947, the country did not receive its first Indian head of state until 15 January 1949.

Lieutenant General KM Cariappa succeeded General Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces in 1949. The handover of authority from the British to India is seen as a watershed. Bindu and Army Day is celebrated in Indian history. This day is also celebrated to pay tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives for the country.
How is Indian Army Day celebrated in the country?
As they are determined to be a war-leading team, the Indian Army plays a vital role in times of crisis. The day was recognized as Indian Army Day to start paying respects to the martyred Indian Army personnel at “Amar Jawan Jyoti” at India Gate, New Delhi.
After the tribute, a spectacular parade with military displays highlights the modern technology and achievements of the Indian Army. Gallantry honors, such as Division Credentials and Sena Medals, are presented on this historic day. During the Army Day celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir, serving army members receive gallantry and highly regarded service medals.
