Indian Army begins mountaineering expedition in Teram town glacier

New Delhi: The Indian Army has launched a mountaineering expedition to simultaneously scale five virgin peaks in the Teram town glacier near Siachen.

The operation was flagged off by Major General Akash Kaushik, Chief of Staff of Fire and Fury Corps from Siachen Base Camp on Monday.

“The Indian Army mountaineers from the Ladakh Scouts Regiment will endeavor to raise Apsaras I, Apsaras II, Apsaras III, PT-6940 and PT-7140 together,” the Union Defense Ministry said in a release.

“The ceremony at the base camp was attended by soldiers posted at the Siachen base camp and veterans of the local Indian Army,” the release said.

This is when the Indian Army conducts the Siachen Glacier trek between August and September every year for about 30 selected civilians recommended by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF).

This is the only chance for a civilian to go to the highest and coldest battlefield in the world.
