India Women’s 4x400m Relay Paris Olympics 2024: Jyothika Sri Dandi, Subha Venkatesan, Vithya Ramraj, Poovamma MR

Jyothika Sri Dandi, Subha Venkatesan, Vithya Ramraj and Poovamma MR will be representing India’s women 4X400m relay team at the 2024 Paris Games.

Jyothika was a part of the Indian mixed 4×400 relay team that registered a national record having won the gold medal at the first edition of the Asian Relay Championships earlier this year.  She initially wanted to become a doctor but later she decided to take up sports.

“I got 97 per cent in class X and when I was in school I actually wanted to be a doctor. But, once I started doing sports, I could not go back and think about becoming a doctor,” Jyothika told news agency PTI.

On the other hand, Subha, the 24-year-old athlete who hails from Trichy in Tamil Nadu, trained at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu’s (SDAT) Centre of Chennai. She was a part of the women’s 4x400m relay team that clinched a silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships in 2018.

Poovamma MR has prior experience of featuring at the Olympics. Having previously faced a two-year ban for a doping offence in 2021, she will now be aiming for an inspiring show at in Paris.

Born in Tamil Nadu, Vithya won bronze at the Asian Games last year. Back then, she succeeded in equalling a national record set by legendary PT Usha. The 25-year-old had also won a silver medal in the 4x400m mixed relay race.

Paris Olympics Qualification

The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team secured its berth for the Paris Olympics having finished at the second spot in the second-round heats at the World Athletics Relays held in May earlier this year. The Indian unit, comprising Rupal Chaudhary, M R Poovamma, Jyothika Sri Dandi and Subha Venkatesan, clocked 3 minutes and 29.35 seconds to claim the second spot right behind Jamaica (3:28.54).
