India vs West Indies series likely to be rescheduled; Kolkata and Ahmedabad can host all matches

Kolkata: amid surge in covid-19 cases driven by highly permeable omicron edition, the BCCI is likely to change the schedule of the upcoming India vs West Indies ODI and T20I series. All the matches of these two series can be organized in only two places instead of six.

The Indian team is currently on a tour of South Africa after playing the ODI series after the Test series. After returning, the Men in Blue are scheduled to play three ODIs with the West Indies team and then three T20Is.

There was a virtual meeting of the Tour and Fixture Committee of BCCI on Wednesday evening. The meeting was attended by BCCI Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hemang Amin along with all four members of the committee. Later, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah joined the virtual meeting.

A reliable source in BCCI has confirmed to ABP that discussions were on to hold the entire series at only two venues which would reduce the chances of contamination and help the BCCI successfully organize the series within a safe bio-bubble .

An official privy to the developments said on the condition of anonymity, “In the current COVID situation, it will be difficult to host all the six matches at six different venues, as scheduled earlier. The health and well-being of the players and the matches.” Officials are our priority and we will not risk anyone coming in contact with COVID. That’s why we are planning to host all the matches at only two venues.”

ABP Live Bengali has learned that Ahmedabad and Kolkata are the frontrunners to host all the six matches. It is likely that one venue hosts the ODI series and the other venue hosts the T20 series.

It has also been learned that the third ODI may be rescheduled for February 13 instead of February 12. The first match of the T20 series to be held on February 15 may be rescheduled for February 16. BCCI may make an official announcement in a few days.
