India vs Sri Lanka: ‘Varun Chakraborty got the X factor’

Former India batsman VVS Laxman heaped praise on mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who made his international debut in the first Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. Varun got off to a decent start with figures of 4-0-28-1, bowling in different parts of the Sri Lankan batting innings. He bowled one over inside the power play, two overs in the middle and one over at death.

“First of all, I am glad that he (Varun Chakraborty) got this opportunity as he had already been selected twice, but he did not pass the fitness test and was not part of the team. I think there is a lot of talk about the mystery surrounding his bowling. I was talking with the Sunrisers batsmen and they were all impressed with the way they bowl in different parts and stages of the match.

Varun had already been included in the Indian team twice before the Sri Lankan tour, but failed the fitness requirements. The KKR bowler was once again backed for the Sri Lankan series, and has made a promising start.

“He can bowl with the new ball, he can come and take wickets whenever the captain and the teams want to break the partnership – that means he has the X-factor. And we want him to have international cricket experience and that’s it. All that can be done is to force him to play. So, I’m sure he’s really looking forward to this opportunity, but one thing we’ve realized over the years is to give him the opportunity. Don’t expect miracles from the first game. It is very important to show patience and faith in a player.”

The second T20 match will be played on July 27.
