India vs New Zealand: Shubman Gill doesn’t look like a Test opener, feels Aakash Chopra

the former India Batsman Aakash Chopra has exposed some technical flaws in Shubman Gill’s batting technique, which have left him weak at the top of the order. Shubman scored a brilliant half-century on the first day of the first test match between India and New Zealand. He looked in fine form in the first session but was dismissed for 52 off 93 balls soon after the lunch break.

The 22-year-old was cast by Kyle Jamieson after lunch as he pushed the ball to his stump through the gap between the bat and the pad while trying to defend.

Chopra said that Shubman doesn’t look like a Test opener to him because of his vulnerability to playing in-swingers.

“Whenever I see him play, he doesn’t look like a Test opener to me. The way he plays inside the line, both the outside edge and the inside edge are exposed,” Chopra said on Star Sports.

However, the veteran opener lauded Shubman’s ability to play spin-bowling and said that his true colors will be seen in the middle order.

“But when he plays spin, he is tall and uses his legs well, uses the reach very well, his footwork is impeccable and his defense is strong. The bat is always in front of the pad,” said the former Test player.

“In my opinion, he is a middle-order batsman, he has been made to open. He has done well as an opener but his true color and form will be seen when he bats in the middle order.”

Earlier, Gill made a spectacular return to Test cricket when a calf injury ruled him out of the series against England. Earlier, there were reports that he might bat in the middle order in the New Zealand Test but KL Rahul was ruled out of the series and Shubman got the starting spot.

Meanwhile, on the first day at stumps, called early due to poor light, India are 258/4 in 84 overs, with Iyer (75 not out from 136 balls) and Jadeja (50 not out off 100 balls) sharing an unbeaten 113-run partnership . Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee reduced India to 145/4 in 49.2 overs.
