Terming Shreyas Iyer an aggressive red-ball player, former national selector Jatin Paranjpe on Wednesday backed the right-handed batsman to perform well when he made his Test debut. India Against New Zealand in Kanpur on Thursday.
We have seen him (Shreyas) play white ball cricket, so I think most people don’t know that he is a really good red ball player, a modern red ball player and an aggressive red ball player . Paranjpe told reporters at MCA BKC here.
Paranjpe, who has played four ODIs, said, “I think this whole thing about debuting at home is very favorable for any player and it will be beneficial for Shreyas as well.”
Earlier in the day, India captain Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that Shreyas will make his Test debut in Kanpur.
“And if they play three spinners, I think it will be even more beneficial because he has come on a track like that so I guess I am just hoping he comes in and if he goes in So I’m sure he’ll do well. ,” Paranjpe said.
“It’s a huge opportunity, no doubt. It’s come through some luck for him, some bad luck for someone else, but that’s how it goes,” he signed off.
26-year-old Shreyas, who hails from Worli area of Mumbai, made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in Dharamsala in December 2017. He made his T20I debut against New Zealand in New Delhi in November 2017.
