Ashwin has a big chance of becoming the third highest wicket-taker for India, surpassing Harbhajan Singh. The 36-year-old is just 5 wickets short of Harbhajan’s tally of 417 wickets. Turbanator is currently India’s third highest wicket-taker behind Anil Kumble (619) and Kapil Dev (434). Ashwin has been included in the playing XI for the first Test at Green Park in Kanpur.

Meanwhile, India’s stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and elected to bat against New Zealand in Kanpur on Thursday. The series is part of the World Test Championship cycle and both the teams will look to score important points here.
Rahane after winning the toss said that the young team is excited to play under the new coaching staff under Dravid’s leadership.
“Looking to bat first. The pitch is looking really good. Usually slows down here afterwards. This is an opportunity for all of us to do well here and in Mumbai. Some senior people are missing. So this is an opportunity for the youth. Shreyas is making his debut. We are all excited to play under the new coaching staff. I personally enjoy playing under Rahul bhai.
