India vs New Zealand 1st Test Day 4: R Ashwin removes Will Young as India set a target of 284

Ravichandran Ashwin removes Will Young with the new ball as New Zealand go to the stumps at 4/1 in four overs on the fourth day of the ongoing first Test against India. With just one day left in the match, New Zealand now have a tall order of 280 runs and nine wickets in hand.

Later India staged a great recovery From 51/5 to declare on 234/7 in 81 overs, the hosts began the chase with New Zealand. Ashwin put the ball down on Will Young’s front pad and went ahead with the bat. After being given out, Young took too long to consult his opening partner Tom Latham for a review.

Young pressed for a ‘T’ review signal but by then, the 15-second time period had elapsed and the review was refused. Hesitation to take a review quickly cost Young and New Zealand the loss as the ball was shown to be missing from the stumps. Young’s scalp resulted in Ashwin equaling Harbhajan Singh’s 417 Test wickets.

Earlier, Ashwin had played a key role in India, playing some lovely shots in setting up the ground for recovery with the bat. After his fall, Shreyas Iyer took charge of India’s recovery with the support of Wriddhiman Saha. Combining aggression and caution, Iyer hit a crucial 65, thus becoming the first Indian Test batsman to score a century in the first innings followed by a half-century in the second innings in the first innings.

Saha completed his sixth Test fifty, battling a neck stiffness. Axar Patel gave them excellent company for an unbeaten stand of 67 as India benefited from fifty-plus partnerships for the sixth, seventh and eighth wickets respectively.

Brief Scores: India 345 (Shreyas Iyer 105, Tim Southee 5/69) and 234/7 fall in 81 overs (Shreyas Iyer 65, Wriddhiman Saha 61 not out, Kyle Jamieson 3/40, Tim Southee 3/75) vs New Zealand 296 in 142.3 overs ( Tom Latham 95, Axar Patel 5/62) and 4/1 in 4 overs (Ravichandran Ashwin 1/3). New Zealand need 280 runs to win.
