Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav have arrived in England for the five-Test series, for which they have been called in the Indian team. Shaw and Suryakumar were in Sri Lanka with the white-ball team and were called in after injuries to Washington Sundar and Shubman Gill.

Suryakumar and Prithvi Shaw both tested negative for COVID-19 and were cleared to fly out of Sri Lanka. The 30-year-old right-handed batsman was part of India’s limited overs team in the island nation. Team India concluded its final training session in Durham on Friday. For the past two weeks, the UK city hosted the players as their training cum warm-up match base. Team members will have bubble to bubble transfer Nottingham.

Suryakumar and Shaw will directly quarantine their rooms in Nottingham. He was selected to join the Test squad as backup players after Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar were ruled out due to injuries.

On Tuesday, Mumbai player Suryakumar shared a photo on Twitter. It showed him boarding the plane and thumbing the camera. The tweet read, “Counting my blessings. Next stop, England.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was hesitant to send both to the UK for the Test series. Sources privy to the developments told ANI, the board officials have decided that both the players will have to self-isolate before the second T20I in Colombo. This was done after all-rounder Krunal Pandya tested positive for COVID-19 and both Suryakumar and Shaw were identified as close contacts. Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal and Krishnappa Gautam are still in isolation as they have not passed the RT-PCR test.

While there has been no official confirmation as to when Suryakumar and Shaw will be available for selection to join the squad, their chances of consideration before the third Test are slim.

India’s injury is causing major setbacks ahead of the start of the series on 4 August. Opener Mayank Agarwal was out after Sundar, Avesh and Shubman Gill were declared. During practice on Monday, he suffered a head injury.
