India declared with a score of 298/8 in the second innings. Shami (56* for 70) and Bumrah (34* off 64) let the English bowling attack down during the final morning as they put on 89 crucial runs for the 9th wicket to give India the lead in the final two sessions.
In the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries, it was India’s first 50+ 9th wicket partnership since VVS Laxman and RP Singh recorded it against Australia in 2008. This is Shami’s second Test fifty and also his highest score.

Resuming the final day at 181/6, India were dealt a major blow when Pant was sent off packing by Ollie Robinson as he poked the ball and passed it to Jos Buttler. He scored 22 runs in 46 balls. Ishant Sharma who played some brilliant shots, went to the pavilion after scoring 16 runs. Robinson was the man again for the hosts as he carried Ishant lbw.
After that, it was all about the Indian tail as Bumrah and Shami kept the English bowlers at bay. Even the short-ball strategy didn’t work for the hosts as both Bumrah and Shami were ready to take it out. The Indian fast bowlers completed a 50-run partnership off 72 balls amid thunderous applause and bouncers from the Lord’s pavilion.
After this, Shami completed his half-century against Moeen Ali with sixes of 4 and 92 meters in two consecutive balls. In the second session, India declared its innings only after 1.3 overs and gave the hosts a mountain to climb on the last day. The announcement also meant that it was the first time in ten innings that Anderson had gone without a wicket against India at Lord’s.
