‘India Team Has Enough in Their Arsenal to be Able to Adapt to Home Conditions in ODI World Cup’: R Ashwin

Experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels so India They have all the weapons in their arsenal to counter the dew factor in ODIs World This year the cup which will be played on Indian soil. Ashwin had earlier advised the ICC to start World Cup matches at 11.30 am as he reiterates it once again on his YouTube channel.

The preparations for the ODI World Cup have begun for India and according to reports, the BCCI has already shortlisted 20 players who have a chance to make it to the World Cup squad. It has started well for India as they have already won ODI series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in home conditions.

2nd ODI: Shami, Rohit Shine India Crush New Zealand To Clinch Series

The cricket showpiece is scheduled in October-November this year when dew becomes a bigger factor for evenings and will be staged entirely across various venues in India for the first time.

“There is no point in moving in one direction and going at loggerheads with the conditions, as the conditions cannot be challenged. You need to learn and adapt to the conditions. Plenty to do in the Indian team’s arsenal is,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“However, on a given day if the dew, the size of the boundary, things going here and there cannot be controlled, and that is the only thing I think India needs to be careful about going into this World Cup. There is a need… For India, in that regard, we are going to be a little bit shortchanged because of the number of venues where we play these games.

“If they get the right cricketing conditions to compete skill by skill, this is a team that will be very difficult to beat. I definitely believe that the ICC should consider making the 2023 ODI World Cup dew free.”

Last week, Ashwin had mooted the idea of bringing the match forward by two hours to bring down the dew factor.

He gave the example of the first ODI against Sri Lanka, where India struggled in the death overs while defending a mammoth total of 374.

Sri Lanka made full use of the conditions to give India a tough fight despite being 206 for 8 and scored 306 for 8.

The veteran spinner pointed out that the boundaries were shortened by about 10-12 meters to accommodate the LED advertising boards, which have now replaced vinyl sheets, in the first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad.

India vs New Zealand: ‘Know the big score hasn’t come but I’m happy with the way it’s going’

“Hyderabad may be a big venue but it is not because of the sponsorship LED boards. It cuts across all other venues in India, especially the older ones which were not built keeping the T20 era in mind,” he said .

“So, the limit of 70 meters in Hyderabad gets reduced to 58 meters depending on the whims and fancies of that particular day.

He said, ‘India’s innate strength is their good spinners. It is not necessary that the quality of spin has deteriorated. But the way the spin is being played and the way the spin is being bowled, sometimes the innate power gets lost.”

“I definitely believe that the game has come a long way since 2011 when Dhoni won the World Cup in India. There has been a lot of exposure for all overseas cricketers, be it England, Australian, South African and New Zealand players. Everyone has come and played IPL and a lot of bilateral series. His understanding of Indian conditions has definitely increased manifold.” However, he added that he has no doubt that India will start the World Cup as favourites.

“Yes, I definitely believe that India’s chances of defending the 2011 home World Cup are really high,” he said, citing figures that they have won 14 out of 18 matches across formats since the 2019 World Cup. Huh.

“India’s ODI home record since the end of the 2019 World Cup is extremely impressive. India have won against every team that has traveled to India in this region, which are West Indies, Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka,” Ashwin said.

“It is a 78 to 80 percent win record in India. All these 18 ODIs have taken place at different venues (14 venues) each time. If you have to compare the same tournament with Australia or England, the venues are pretty stock standard. They play all their Test matches at 4-5 positions, ODIs at 2-3 positions and so they know their positions are in their hands.”
