India successfully test-fires short-range surface-to-air missile

New Delhi: The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Tuesday said that India successfully test-fired a Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur off the Odisha coast.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that this system will further enhance the defense capability of Indian Navy ships against aerial threats. The air defense system, which can hit targets at a range of about 15 km, is being developed by DRDO for naval warships.

“This has paved the way for integration of weapon systems on Indian naval ships,” a press release said. The first trial was conducted on February 22 this year. The missile system will replace the old Barak-1 surface-to-air missile system.
