India needs a Nobel Prize mission, says former IIT director

According to Prof. Rao, this will not happen unless 50 people knock on “Nobel’s door” every year. Prof Rao then listed some of the ways that this agenda could be shaped into reality. The country needs to identify 100 research disciplines with a chance of winning the Nobel Prize and 500 young faculty talent from top Indian institutions doing “cutting edge research”.

Pro. Rao suggested that this group of talented individuals should “regularly network” with Nobel laureates around the world. Professor Rao said in the post that things like generous research grants, fully paid exchange tips and flexible relaxation should be a part of this mission, along with “laureates-in-residence programs”.

So far, only four people of Indian origin have won the Nobel Prize in Science, including renowned Indian physicist CV Raman.
