India is plagued by extreme climate events, but are we taking the right steps?

But as some parts of India grapple with excessive rainfall, others are facing heat waves that have become a regular occurrence in the country and temperatures are reaching new highs year after year.

In the beginning of July, Delhi and the rest of North India were engulfed in the grip of scorching heat, colder areas like Ladakh in the Himalayan region also recorded high temperatures and heatwaves.

Earlier in February, a flash flood in the Rishiganga river destroyed a hydroelectric power plant in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. More than 200 people lost their lives in that incident. While experts believe that the floods were caused by a glacial burst, they also blame ecologically harmful development activities for the disaster.

And it is not only India that is dealing with extreme climate events. From Germany to China to Canada to the US – countries around the world are witnessing unprecedented rain, record-breaking scorching heat and the raging wildfires that climate experts have already warned.

What does this say about the future? Can action still be taken to address global warming?
