New Delhi:

India on Wednesday handed over six tonnes of relief material, including essential medicines and medical equipment, to earthquake-hit Syria. The consignment was sent in a C-130J military transport aircraft on Tuesday night and was handed over to the Syrian authorities by India’s Charge d’Affaires SK Yadav this morning.

India on Tuesday sent specialized search and rescue teams to Turkey carrying relief materials, a mobile hospital and four C-17 Globemaster military transport aircraft to support the country’s rescue efforts after a massive earthquake that killed thousands.

In the wake of the massive earthquake that hit North-Western Syria on February 6, causing widespread devastation and loss of precious lives, the Government of India has dispatched six tonnes of emergency relief aid to Syria through a special Indian Air Force aircraft. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

It said Mr Yadav handed over the consignment to Syria’s deputy minister for local administration and environment, Mutaz Dawzi, at Damascus airport.

“The consignment includes emergency medicines and equipment including portable ECG machines, patient monitors and other essential medical items,” it said in a statement.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India has been providing humanitarian, technical and developmental assistance to Syria through bilateral and multilateral channels over the years.

India on Monday decided to send National Disaster Response Force, medical teams and search and rescue teams to Turkey after Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed to extend all possible assistance to the country. India sent about 102 tonnes of relief material to Turkey.

Several countries, including the US and the UK, are sending relief supplies and search and rescue experts to Turkey and Syria to help search for survivors.
