Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the performance of Indian universities in the THE World University Rankings. As per the statistics released recently by Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, the participation of Indian varsities has increased tremendously since 2016. A total of 31 universities participated in 2016 and the number has now risen to 133. In 2024, as many as 124 varsities took part in the global rankings. This makes India the fourth-represented country in the rankings.

“India’s rising visibility in the THE world rankings is remarkable, driven by Narenda Modi’s internationalisation reforms. A record 133 Indian universities have submitted to the 2025 rankings – up from 42 in 2017 – making India the 4th best represented in the world,” wrote Phil Baty on microblogging site X.

Reposting Baty’s post, Modi said that India will continue to support its educational institutions and provide opportunities for growth and innovation. “Great to see India’s universities making strides on the global stage! Our commitment to quality education is yielding encouraging results. We will continue to support our educational institutions and provide opportunities for growth and innovation. This will help our youth greatly” the prime minister wrote while sharing Baty’s post.

Earlier, on June 7, CEO and Managing Director of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd, Nunzio Quacquarelli, said that the last 10 years have seen continued improvement in the performance of Indian universities in QS World University Rankings under the PM’s leadership. As many as 46 institutions compared to 11 in 2015 participated in the rankings which is a 318 per cent increase in 10 years, and the best amongst the G20.

PM Modi reposted his post stating, “Over the last decade, we have focused on qualitative changes in the education sector. This is reflected in the QS World University Rankings. Compliments to the students, faculty and institutions for their hard work and dedication. In this term, we want to do even more to boost research and innovation.” (sic)
