What to expect from this round of talks

In the fresh round of talks, the Indian side is expected to press for early withdrawal of troops at all remaining friction points besides seeking resolution of issues in Depsang Bulge and Demchok.

The situation in eastern Ladakh figured prominently in the talks between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Bali on 7 July. Wang stressed the need for early resolution of all pending issues in eastern Ladakh, Jaishankar said in an hour-long meeting on the sidelines of a conference of foreign ministers of the G20 countries.

East Ladakh border standoff

The eastern Ladakh border standoff began on May 5, 2020, following violent clashes in the Pangong Lake areas. Both sides gradually increased their deployment by carrying thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weapons. As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides last year completed the demilitarization process on the north and south shores of Pangong Lake and in the Gogra region. Each side currently has around 50,000 to 60,000 troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive area.
