The Indian boxing contingent had a forgettable outing at the 33rd edition of the Summer Olympics in Paris 2024 as none of the pugilists managed to land a position on the podium.

The tricolour was represented by six Indian pugilists in France, four women and two men, however, none of the pugilists could manage to bag a medal for the country.

The nation’s wait for a medal in men’s boxing since Vijender Singh stuck bronze in 2008 Beijing continued with some major upsets dampening the unit’s showing.

The Indian Boxing Contingent:

Nikhat Zareen – Women’s 50 Kg

The Olympic debutant had the nation rallied behind her ahead of the quadrennial in the French capital city following strong showings on the international stage over the years in the lead up to the spectacle.

She got her campaign off on a good note as she posted 5-0 over German opponent Maxi Kloetzer, but succumbed to a shock defeat in the Round of 16 against Chinese boxer Wu Yu.

Lovlina Borgohain – Women’s 75 Kg

The boxer who picked up the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, was expected to bring home a historic second medal and nearly lived up to the billing as she moved into the quarterfinals of her event with a dominant 5-0 win over Norwegian Sunniva Hofstad in the Round of 16.

However, she could not move into the semifinal, which would have guaranteed a medal for the boxer and the nation’s tally, as she went down to Chinese pugilist Li Qian 1-4.

Amit Panghal – Men’s 51 Kg

Amit was one of two male boxers looking to emulate the brilliant Vijender’s feat by bagging a medal but fell to a shock defeat at the hands of Patrick Chinyemba. The Zambian started off stronger and maintained his form through the bout as he registered a 4-1 win to show the Indian the exit door early in the Round of 16.

Nishant Dev – Men’s 71 Kg

Nishant kept the nation’s hopes for a medal alive as she moved into the quarterfinal of his weight class with a Round of 16 triumph over Jose Rodriguez of Ecuador as the Indian clinched a 3-2 split verdict.

However, he was ousted by Mexican pugilist Marco Verde before securing a semifinal berth. The Nishant started off the stronger of the two as he had the judges score in his favour in Round 1 of the bout, but the Mexican turned things around in the remaining two rounds to move into the semis.

Preeti Pawar – Women’s 54 Kg

Preeti started her Parisian campaign on an encouraging note as she posted a 5-0 victory by unanimous decision against the likes of Vo Thi Kim Anh of Vietnam to surge into the Round of 16, but Yeni Arias of Colombia awaited the Indian in the pre-quarters bout and got the better of 20-year-old from Bhiwani with a split verdict of 3-2 that pointed in the direction of the South American.

Jaismine Lomboria – Women’s 57 Kg

A lot of hopes were pinned on Jaismine going into the showpiece in France, but the promise of a medal in the Women’s 57 Kg category was dashed early in the campaign as the CWG bronze medallist fell to a 0-5 defeat to Nesthy Petecio of Philippines.
