India at Paris Olympics 2024, Day 4 Wrap: Manu Bhaker-Sarabjot Singh Win Bronze, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty Shine – News18

Team India doubled their medal tally at the 33rd edition of the Summer Olympics on Tuesday as ace shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh bagged the bronze medal in the 10m Mixed Air Pistol event. However, the boxers representing the tricolour had to endure a disappointing day as Amit Panghal, Jaismine and Preeti were all shown the exit door.

The men’s badminton doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty topped their group with yet another win on the day, and as did the men’s hockey team with their win over the Irish.

Archer Bhajan Kaur booked her place in the Ro16 of the individual recurve event, but Ankita Bhakat could not make it to the Round of 32. Dhiraj Bommadevara narrowly missed out on a quarterfinal spot as he went down to Eric Peters of Canada after getting the better of Adam Li in the previous round.

Shooting: 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team- More history for Manu

The Indian 10m Air Pistol Mixed team of Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh claimed the bronze medal in the event to add to the national contingent’s medal tally on Tuesday as they overcame the South Korean unit.

Despite a sluggish start to the fixture, the Indian duo clawed a way back into the tie and managed to triumph 16-10 to claim third place on the podium.

Rowing: Men’s Sculls Quarterfinal- Balraj out of medal contention.

India’s lone rower Balraj Panwar finished 5th in the quarterfinal of the men’s sculls event as he clocked 7:05.10.

However, he dropped out of the race for a medal with only the top three from each of the quarterfinals earning progress. Panwar will now compete in the Semifinal C/D for better ranking.

Shooting: Men’s Trap Qualification- Thondaiman misses out

Prithviraj Tondaiman failed to secure qualification in the men’s trap shooting event as he ended 21st on the list by finishing with a combined tally of 118 points after two days of qualification.

Only the top six, decided by a qualification shoot-off between 10 shooters, will advance to the final.

Archery: Women’s Individual Recurve- Kaur through, Bhakat out

Indian women’s archers had a contrasting day as Bhajan Kaur earned progress to the Round of 16, after Ankita Bhakat was shown the exit door in the Round of 32 of the women’s individual recurve event on Tuesday.

Kaur got the better of Polishwomen Syifa Kamal 7-3 (27-27, 27-29, 29-27, 27-25, 28-25) to advance to the subsequent round in the event, while Bhakat went down to Wioleta Myszor 4-6 (26-27, 29-26, 28-27, 27-29, 27-28) in the individual event. Kaur went on to earn qualification to the quarters of the event with a 6-0 thrashing of Myszor (28-23, 29-26, 28-22) to reach the round of 16.

Badminton: Men’s Doubles: Sat-Chi top group

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty topped Group C to enter the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles badminton event unbeaten as the top-rated pair outclassed Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto 21-13, 21-13 in straight games.

Hockey: Boys in Blue Down the Irish

The Indian hockey team got the better of Ireland with a 2-0 win as skipper Harmanpreet Singh netted a brace, once through a penalty stroke and the other from a penalty corner.

This was India’s second win in three games following their 3-2 win against New Zealand in the opener and the 1-1 stalemate against Argentina.

Boxing: Amit, Jaismine, Preeti Handed Exits

Pugilist Jaismine bowed out of the women’s 57 Kg boxing event with a defeat in the Round of 32 against Nesthy Petecio as the Indian went down by a score of 0-5 to her opponent from the Philippines.

There was disappointment for Amit Panghal too in the 51 Kg men’s Round of 16 boxing clash as he went down to Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba by a score of 1-4.

Preeti Pawar also went down fighting as Colombia’s Yeni Arias picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Indian in the 54 Kg Ro16 contest.

Badminton: Women’s Doubles- Ashwini, and Tanisha bow out

Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto’s campaign at the Paris Olympics came to an end as the Indian duo went down 15-21, 10-21 to Australia’s Angela Yu and Setyana Mapasa in straight sets. Ponappa and Crasto had a forgettable outing in France as they lost all three of their fixtures to finish at the bottom of Group C.

Archery: Men’s Individual Recurve- Dhiraj suffers heartbreak

Archer Dhiraj Bommadevara, who competed in the men’s individual recurve event got the better of Adam Li in the Round of 32, but went down to Eric Peters in agonising fashion in the Round of 16 fixture as the Canadian clawed back to claim a thrilling victory over the Indian.

Shooting: Women’s Trap Shooting- Rajeshwari, Shreyasi left with a mountain to climb

At the end of the third round of the women’s trap shooting event, India’s Rajeshwari Kumari, and Shreyasi Singh have their task cut out as they stand 21st and 22nd respectively.
